Should I take an Online Yoga Teacher Training?
Is an online yoga teacher training right for you?
Historically when choosing a Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga Teacher Training a main focus was the location of the YTT. Since April 2020 when the Yoga Alliance began allowing online yoga teacher trainings prospective students have another factor to consider when selecting a training. They are now able to get their Yoga Alliance RYT200 or RYT500 Yoga Teaching Certification Online. You can now get 200 Hour, 300 Hour or 500 Hour Certified from home.
As the Owner and Lead Teacher of Harmony Yoga School I have been Yoga Alliance Certified since 2005 and I have run both in person and online yoga teacher trainings.
I can see that there are many similarities and also many differences between the two styles of 200 Hour Trainings. Rather than saying that one is better than the other I can honestly say that it depends on the student, their needs and their desires and where they are in their life when taking the training. I have had many online YTT graduates who loved their training and who told me they never would have done and in person course due to family, work or other obligations.
Benefits of an Online Yoga Teacher Training Certification (200 Hour or 300 Hour)
You can start the course soon start working towards your certification now, while you feel inspired.
You can study from the comfort of home and be in a familiar setting with your own food, family, pets, bed, and other resources to keep you comfortable.
You reduce expenses by not having to pay for travel and accommodation
You can continue to fulfill your family and work obligations and can do the course in conjunction with your life
Often the course will have some pre-recorded videos and content that you can pause if needed and go back and watch again if desired. This is a HUGE benefit of online learning; you get to go at your own pace and review if you want to.
More efficient: the online training is generally more efficient as less time is spent on group sharing and group activities and more is spent on just YOU and your learning process.
You can follow and schedule of study times that works for YOU. Rather than sticking with a retreat or workshop schedule on an in person YTT when you do an online course you can study when you want to. Early morning, evening, all day by the pool, whatever you feel works with your own lifestyle and learning techniques.
You can maintain your own routines of eating, exercise, walking the dog etc as you will be in the comfort of your own home.
Disadvantages of an Online 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification
You do not get the close knit group experience of a retreat
You do not get the "retreat" atmosphere of an immersion experience
You will have other distractions of being at home; kids, pets, social obligations
